Default Hone wear on new razors

    Hi All,

As a matter of curiosity, how much hone wear is acceptable/usual on a brand new razor? The reason I ask is that I was in a store the other day looking at a new Dovo and noticed quite a bit of hone wear on the spine. In fact, the wear was also uneven. I asked the assistant if it was new or used - they assured me it was new.

I think I read somewhere that Dovo finish their blades off by hand, so I suppose some hone marks are inevitable. But this was way more than just marks, and I was suprised by it.

The DOVO I got honed from Tony M didn't have any. That should tell you something about honesty and integrity in that store.

The Dovo I bought new had no hone wear at all. Sounds like the salesmans a twit

I've had some razors that were over a century old with no visible hone wear.

Don't worry, DOVO's have some hone wear even when new. I have three newly bought DOVO razors, all with initial hone wear, which must be there if the razor is leaving the factory honed, as DOVOs are...

In that case it should be even and BARELY perceptible.

This was way more than "barely perceptible". Thanks for the responses everyone - it's nice to know I'm not being completely paranoid.

Most of the New Dovo's I've seen lately have some hone wear and it has been very noticeable.

Maybe Dovo is has been listening to our comments and is now trying to establish a decent bevel on the razor before it leaves the factory? Maybe they have not learned the electrical tape trick? Or maybe they have a new person grinding the bevel?

The new Dovos included with my kits show hone wear right out of the box even before I have them honed. Some barely show any signs other are easily noticed but none are really excessive as on a well used razor.

Through the magic of Wi-Fi I still have internet access even in the heart of beard, umm I mean Amish country <g>. Been through a few antique stors today and saw only a few razors. Nothing great, most $15-20 all pretty worn down too. Saw several cut up paddle and loom strops, no hanging strops but did snag a really nice, early slide rule from K&E of around 1920s vintage.
