    Default The Stub-Tailed Shavers

I noticed there is no group for the proud owners of ancient blades, and thought I would try to remedy the situation. The Stub-Tailed Shavers is a place to post those classic razors which stand out due to their short tails. They may not be the easiest to hold, but they are always a pleasure to shave with.

To get the ball rolling, I've got a few shots of my smallest and largest blades. The Revitt (the second T is mostly worn off) was almost certainly reground; while some grind marks remain, enough attention was paid to the job to add a stylized, W&BBow-esque tip. The Savage had never been honed before I bought it (or so I was told), and had been fully restored. As a result, there are some remains of pitting and a bit of staining, but there is ZERO spine wear and the blade retains her full width as a nearly-true wedge.

I do have some others, but I don't really like to post pictures of blades unless I'm quite certain I'll be holding onto them.

Please tell me how that Savage shaves! I'm drooling just thinking about it. =)

Well now you've got me drooling. The Savage has a wicked edge on her, and she is a joy to shave with. There is a taper towards the heal, but the thumb notch and curved tang (which you can't really see in the pictures) make up for it. Going ATG, she glides up through the crevices on either side of my throat. WTG? Forget about it! It's like having the hairs wiped off your face by gravity itself.

I do have to say that if I could only have a single razor, it wouldn't be her. But all in all, she is my favorite razor... Out of the razors that I have.

No one else has any? I find that pretty hard to believe.

"I" did this one over the course of two days (day 2 was our get together) at JoeD's house and with extensive assistance from Joe.

The blade is a 6/8 concave grind with "R. Hovenden & Sons" on the front of the tang, "NEVA" in flowery all capitals on the back (might be more before that that is worn off), and "The British Razor" on the front on the section of the spine just above the hone wear. Scales are Lacewood; Joe provided all the supplies including the wood, and he did most of the work as well. Kept the original spacer, which is either lead or pewter. Domed washers (Joe's son showed me how to make those) and brass pins.

I hit the blade with some MAAS, but focused only on the tang since I was short on time and the blade was going to go back into her scales the following day. I will probably do a bit more polishing on the rest of the blade when I have more free time.

Here is my favorite stub-tail. It's an early Wosty. Along with my best shaver. It's a Smith. (The tail was a bit stubbier before the restoration.)

I have an early J & R Dodge I'm sending to Traveller to restore. I'll try to put up some pictures once I get it back.

Christopher....I just love that old Wosty. You wouldn't be offended if I asked for a set of scales in that colour would you?

Not at all, brother. Just ask for the "Earth as seen from space" color scheme. (It's even nicer in person!)

I've been trying to find some more ancients, but they're hard to come by.

check out my Perfect Wizard from this thread:
    http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...-any-info.html

it's a stub and fantastic, although it looks like it's been rescaled, and is a stub 'cause the old tail broke off :-P

    still, great razor.
