Default shaving ones legs and such

OK I am getting my friend into DE/straight shaving, she is trying to save money on razors and have some fun. We bought some good cheap DE razors off of eBay and will start the process when they arrive.... Now I can show her how to shave her face, but that is not where she is shaving.. I need to know techniques for shaving legs.. and.. um Lady Bits.. I also need to know what type of products she will need.

Her skin is not oily (pretty normal actually) and when she shaves now she uses a Venus razor and body wash as cream. Do we need a pre-shave oil? do we need to get her a brush and cream? Does she need to get a balm or any special lotion? any help would be greatly appreciated on this subject.

    Thanks

She can start out using what she already has, but getting her a brush and cream is a good thing. Some don't like to bother with it so even if you get her a shaving soap that she can lather up with is a step in the right direction. Pre-shave oils are not needed and many of us just use a lotion or body butter for afterwards.

Hope this helps, feel free to pm me with questions also.

If your friend hasn't used a DE before, make sure she knows *not* to bear down (some women use lots of pressure with disposables, at least on their legs). A light touch is best - it's all about the angle, like with a straight razor.

and I will also add not to shave too fast either. My olderst daughter used my DE in the shower the other day and looks like she tried to filet herself. I am guessing she is used to speed shaving or something and the bite she took out of her leg must have been two and a half inches long

The second time I ever used my SR I almost filleted my calf, I was so engrossed in what I was doing I didn't hear my partner come into the bathroom and I jumped just at the wrong moment, hehehe

It is a different technique using an SR/DE compared to a disposable. Like Bmad's daughter and as Northpaw said, I used to be one of those heavy handed speed shavers with a disposable! lol Angle and pressure are the most important and will only come with practice. I'm rather proud of my SR scars, hehehe.

Loads of great advice so far so I'll tell you my routine too. A hot bath is the best pre-shave prep ever! You can relax and get focused on your shave, plus the fact it's the only time most ladies (especially if you're a mom) get any time to themselves.

Though you can use bodywash or tinned foam, please make the extra effort and invest in some shave soap and a brush (if you can), it will make the experience far more enjoyable. I can still remember now how it felt the very first time I had nice warm lather on my legs, bliss. You can get a basic Boar bristle brush to start with until you both work out if this is the road you want to take. I started with a Bristle brush and now have a custom silver badger one.

Take your time, don't rush it's not a contest! I always start in the middle of my leg, going from ankle up to knee, wiping off the blade when neccessary, I work outward from there but usually only need a single pass and go against the grain. Stretching is also important, so if starting at the ankle and working up she needs to pull downwards on the skin on top of her foot and try to point her toes out as if she were trying to stand on tip-toe. Wherever she is shaving, make sure the other hand is just below where the razor will be starting from and pull downwards.

How or where you stand/sit is pretty much personal choice. I usually have my foot up on the side of the bath so I'm close to the sink but then I do have a small bathroom!

Knees can be tricky, comparisons have been made between the techniques used for shaving chins as it is a similar curvature. I usually go against the grain again, but need more passes here. The best angle I have found which also does the job of stretching the skin for you is leaning forward when you have your leg up and completely bend the knee.

As for after shave care she can use her favourite moisturiser/body butter and shouldn't get any problems. I use either Lush Cosmetics "Celestial" or Covent Garden Sanctuary range because it smells awesome!

    Happy shaving

Have her join the ladies only topic. These gals here will have going well in short order. She can also be frank in her questions with them, not so easy in a man filled world I would think but easy in the place set up for them.
