Some guys with experience with more different hones than I'll ever have settle in with the Norton 4/8 as a major part of their progression. The idea that a hone snob wouldn't buy one is inaccurate, unless we're talking about snobbery based in ignorance...

I got your point, but I didn't find it funny. And, snobbery isn't always based in inorance. It wouldn't take me long to demonstrate that it if I cared enough to do so. Suffice it to say there are a lot of types of people that I won't associate with under any circumstances, products that I absolutely refuse to use, etc; in short, I'm a snob in several ways - not related to social status. Ignorance has nothing to do with that.

I refuse to buy a Pakistani razor, they suck. I know that. Snobbery based on facts, not ignorance. I guess we do have a different view on snobbery. The world needs every type I guess

Pakistani razors are crap, sure a fact(I've had the "pleasure" of trying to hone one)), I wouldn't ever buy one, and that's not not snobbery in my book.
Snobbery as I've learned it is talking/acting condescending towards things/persons you think is "below" you.

I absolutely am. Using crap products is below me, and I don't do it. There are people that are below me too. Pedophiles come to mind.

So, there we were......surrounded by 75,000 hostile Indians............

Alrighty then....I'm up and running.

The two warriors:

1) Wade and Butcher, 7/8, full hollow.
2) Dovo Best, 5/8, full hollow.

I chose to use my Dovo, because many people begin their shaving journey with one of these razors. In fact, I just honed one last night for a new forum gentleman.

Both razors were taped. Both razors had circles done straight down and back on the hone, and both heels were canted forward about 30 degrees for the X strokes.

Wade and Butcher:

4k) No slurry. 20 circles, medium pressure. Repeat. Followed with 10 X's, medium pressure. Then, 20 circles NO pressure. Repeat. Followed with 10 X's no pressure. Rinsed stone and razor. Finished the 4k with 10 X's, smooth, even strokes.

8k) 10 X's. No pressure, smooth and even strokes.


Dovo Best Quality:

4k) Medium slurry with DMT 325. 20 circles, NO pressure. Repeat. Followed with 10 X's, no pressure. Rinse stone and razor. Then 20 circles, no pressure. Repeat. Followed by 10 X's no pressure. Rinsed stone and razor. Finished with 10 X's, smooth, even strokes.

8k) 10 X's, no pressure. Rinsed stone and razor. New water on stone. Remove water with finger. Damp stone: 10 X's, ultra light, very slow stroke (3-4 seconds down, 3-4 seconds back).

Stropping: Both razors were stropped on an SRD Premium III, 50/100 - webbing/leather.

Shave test comes this afternoon.

Birnando, trying various stropping regimens is indeed on the plan too.
