How about the spray they use to fix charcoal drawing? As it is a spray you will get a very smoot laiyer I think.

Similar to the stuff in the pic I posted. Workable and permanent fixative. I was going to get that but in reading the labels I found that the Preserve It stuff was more able to stand up to being exposed to getting wet.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've been pondering too. On the one hand tools are made to be put to good use, and I sincerely believe it is best in all respect to do so; on the other hand one does want to prevent wear and slow down deterioration as much as possible to enjoy them longest. Complicating factor: reluctance to do anything irreversible to something of value (not necessarily valuable) that will likely outlast oneself.

I've now decided to give Golden Archival Varnish a try. Both on a labelled Escher (with, incidentally, exactly the same dark blue end label, but a red back one) and on some cardboard hone boxes.

The question I'm trying to answer now: can and should I clean the soiled and darkened label first, and if so, how?

If you ARE going to preserve the label, you might as well clean it up to your best ability. I did some looking along this very topic.... rubber crepe eraser perhaps?

    I dunno.

Joke, what did you ever decide with this? Did you seal it? How did it come out? I've got the same stone coming and I'm contemplating what I'm going to do with the label.
