Thread: Camellia oil

Has anyone used camellia oil on their razors? I saw that they sell it at Garrett Wade Tools. They claim it provides superior protection for steel from rust and staining with out leaving a oily feeling. Sounds like it might be just the thing. If this has been asked before I apologize, but I didn't see anything about it in the forums.

At least a couple of the guys on the Yahoo site use it on their razors as a protectant. Camellia oil was used by the Japanese to protect Samurai swords, so it's a safe bet for straight razors.

What about just using mineral oil? I had good experiences with it.

I use it also for longer term storage. The razor has to be absolutely dry before application or you will just cover the moisture with oil and it will rust underneath.

Mineral oil will work too. Typicall, baby oil is mineral oil with a little scent added.

Good point; it's happened to me. I keep my regular rotation blades dry (very dry).

Thanks for the tip. I'm almost out of that stuff I bought for 2x the price @ Home Depot lol. I was gonna buy just straight mineral oil at a pharmacy, but baby oil smells better. On top of that, I can use it in addition to my colognes. Women seem to be more responsive if you use a baby product. I guess that gets'em thinking of motherhood, which leads to the first stage of the process
