    Default sunday morning breakfast!

    while looking around here before the family get ups and making breakfast i thought i would share my pancake recipe with anyone who wants a really good non-buttermilk recipe,
    1 1/2 cups of flour
    2 cups of milk
    1 pinch of salt
    3 tablespoons of sugar
    2 eggs
    1/4 cup melted butter

    thats it thats all folks,
    the best way to enjoy them is with raspberry jam, stack 3 or 4 high and put jam in between them! i find that if you use a cast iron fry pan you get the best results, if oil is needed on the pan, pure lard is the way to go(you don't need much) and also if you use a 1/3 cup measure to pour the batter into the pan, if the mixture is right it should give you a 1/8" to 3/16" thick pancake that is about 6"-8" in diameter!

    nice! i use cast iron skillets for almost everything

    something you should try IF you ever find any for sale or some one happens to give you some is pure sugar cane syurp. not so good on a pancake because its a thick really strong smelling syurp. but its heaven on some biscuts or waffles

    same here i find myself staying away from "non stick" stuff more and more. that syrup sounds good gonna see if i can find some of it.
    one question for you about your cast irons, do they ever touch water? mine don't but some people wash theirs after every use. i have cats irons that haven't been washed for 15-20 years( i inherited them) and my mother has more that never been washed in almost 50 years! i find that this seasons them incredible well! whats your thought on this subject!

    if i can avoid it at all costs i wont wash them..but if they do see water its just plain hot water just to help scrape off whatver wouldnt wipe off with a paper towel then i spoon out some bacon grease and put it on the stove and get the grease hot and "cook" the grease back into the pan...i bought a new one here in korea its not the same quality skillet as i had im still working on getting a good seasoning going to it but i dont think it is a quality metal. dont get me wrong i love no stick pots, but if im cooking ina pan i want my trusty black skillet......... but
    on a side note if your chick cant cook..dont let her touch your skillets! my ex wrecked my fav one.....she put in the dishwasher...i tried to bring it back to life but it was done for...we broke up shortly after, besides what mother wants her son married to someone girl who cant cook

    what you may really like is make a sour cream cornbread in your skillet with bacon on the bottom!! its pretty amazing

    Ummm...the hotcakes sound delicious. I'll try them!

    I too love cast iron. Even when the seasoning get's wrecked and rust starts, it's iron rust and will NOT hurt you. It's just we modern folk are not accustomed to using pots or pans with rust in/on them like our forefathers/ancients were. But seasoning IS key. It makes them "naturally" a non-stick cooking utensil. No chemical bond of toxic's to make your food "slippery".

    That said, Sunday morning breakfasts are my favorite of the week. The whole family is present - which makes it my favorite. I especially love when we make Belgian Waffles. I have no secret recipe but, Belgian waffles kick butt! I might try this recipe and toss the batter into my Belgian waffle maker. I bet it'll taste great....with the butter and jam/s tucked neatly (or sloppy) in between layers.

    planza, all the reasons you listed is the same reason i love the sunday morning breakfast! and any way you enjoy it is the best reason.

    Bamaracin, mine never touch water, always clean them while there hot and spoon in some pure lard(animal not vegatable) and that seems to keep them in tip top shape and ready to go the next time they are called upon!

    and on that side note, my wife is an awesome cook, i have learned alot from her! and between you me and the fence post she is a better cook than my mom! please don't tell my mother that. lol. jk they are both great cooks in there own way one is not better than the other just different styles.

    That sounds great, but your missing one thing.

    Chocolate Chips! and/or bacon! If you can find them bacon.choco chips are great as a quick add in. makes the bestest pancakes ever!

    I too love cast, but find the big skillets are just getting too heavy for me to drag around, and have found myself working with heavy copper bottom stainless instead. so much lighter!

    keep that in mind when you all get old and arthritic!

    Sorry if this seems kind of "smart-alicky" but - if you keep them skillets and such on the stove your problem of dragging them around is solved. That's where a cast iron is home anyway - on the stove top, 24/7/365.

    Seriously though, my day isa comin....I am 50 plus and have issues like you developing - as well as a few other things "poppin up" as I age. It's to be expected but NOT welcomed! Especially when as a youth one abuses themselves either by accident or on purpose. You know what I mean?

    Oh, I know what you mean...8 car accidents, and 3 motorcyle accidents later, there is not much that doesnt hurt anymore. And Im not even all that old! (and no, I was not even the driver for most of those!)
    As for leaving skillet on stove, then where would I put the tea pot?
