Thread: Two Gold Dollars

Some time ago, I found an interesting thread at B&B: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthr...on-2013/page19, I fell in love with the razor on that page. Hence, I thought I might give it a try myself and ordered a bunch of Gold Dollars. These two are my first attempts and while they are not quite as neat as the one in the link, I am very content with the result! The square point gave me a nice shave, but the French point was a bit harsh. Scales are untreated ebony with a bone wedge, nickel-silver pinning. The French point has washerless pins

I have to say that for $6 I am tempted to have a go too, I've got an idea of what I want to make, but from past experience of a lot of my projects, I might be better off spending the money on a coffee

I bought 8 at $4 or ~€3 each at aliexpress.com, free shipping. It's amazing how the manufacturers can make these razors at such a rate and still make money on them! I'm already working on the next one, perhaps I have too much time on my hands.

Know what you mean, I can buy audio leads from China via eBay for $0.50 with free postage. If I wanted to post that same lead to bongo who lives about 30km from me it would cost $1.20.
You don't necessarily have any more free time than me, we probably just use it differently. Nice work by the way. I am thinking of copper scales maybe with a brass wedge, IF I get round to doing anything. If I do I know what I want.

Very nice custom job, it looks like you spent a fair bit of time polishing the blade too. Most of the Gold Dollar blades I have seen have something of a brushed finish. Did you need to do much work on the edge to get it shaving nicely?

In my limited experience with the G.D. 66 it's a bit of a crap shoot.
Some are better than others.


Generally speaking, I spend from 5 minutes to 30 minutes
with my dremel-clone before honing can begin.
This is before I modify the shape into an aesthetically pleasing profile.

Think of it as a partially blank canvas that is already heat-treated.
The quickest one I've honed to shave-ready took all of 30 minutes
on my Naniwas (1k, 5k, 8k, 12k).

Once you've "done a G.D.", you have accumulated all the skills to restore a
vintage blade from, say, ebay etc.....Great fun to be had !!
