Thread: Vegemite

If Rob can have a licorice thread, I want to have one about vegemite!
For the brits this is a marmite knock-off, which is actually much better than the original product.

Here's my story. I first hated it. It is gross and looks rather unappealing. But then I went to .au and stayed with my hippie friends, not fully appreciating beforehand what their vegan-ness means. Well after 2 days of breakfast full of sweet stuff, I would've kiled for anything savory. So vegemite on a crumpet with margerine it was, Pretty tollerable at first, by the end of the week I was totally into it.

Well, that was years ago, and the only ting that's worse than the fact there's no vegemite in wegmans is that they don't have any crumpets either (well at one point they did, but they were not all that good).

So, let them eat licorice.

I've had Marmite. I spread it on toast and didn't think it was that bad. I'd have to me in a mood for something very salty since it is. I like the idea of spreading on toast after toast is buttered; I didn't try it that way. I bet it's better with that combo.

I'd buy another jar but I'm the only one that would eat it in my household!

To me it's OK - I never buy it I have to say but wouldn't turn it away if somebody offered me some. The marketing is interesting though - there are not many products sold in the way they do it over here. It is pushing a real 'love it or hate it' kind of thing. They are goading people to give it a try and see which camp they are in. Maybe like you, Gugi, they suspect that once tried you keep going till you like it - 'other folk like it why can't I - maybe if I persevere?' A bit like smoking. Eveybodies first cigarette made them gag. The negative images portrayed on TV adverts etc. to sell it are just a big 'no no' in general marketing terms but they seem to work. They have created a challenge and a special club to join. That in itself makes me almost not want to eat it...I hate folk trying to mess with my mind in such a peripheral way.

Hi Gugi! sorry but I have to disagree a tad with ya mate... There is nothing better than a buttered grilled toast with MARMITE. Vegemite is ok, but for my taste only a pale imitation of an unmatched original product.

Many moons ago when I was a vegetarian I used to mix Vegemite into my spaghetti sauce. I could never stomach it straight-up...

Marmite, Vegemite, promite, love 'em all! Brought up many years ago on boiled egg and Marmite soldiers!

Being a Brit I should go for the Marmite but I must admit to preferring the Vegemite. A milder flavour, probably because most Aussie beer is lager!

My favourite use is on buttered toast under poached or scrambled eggs.

Marmite on buttered toast is one of life's true comfort foods. No one has mentioned the evil twin in the UK called Bovril which many will mix one teaspoon into a mug of hot water and drink it...

You guys may not see it much, but there's a snack here called Twiglets. They're essentially crunchy twig-shaped wholewheat bits covered in marmite. Yummmm!
As for Vegemite, I ain't sayin' nuttin', 'cos you'll have me and Jimbo doing fisticuffs.

I love Marmite. My oldest son loved Marmite. My youngest cat goes absolutely nuts whenever I'm spreading Marmite on my bread and I always have to cave in and let him clean the knife for a very long time. The other two cats don't care for it at all so the variance for taste preference for Marmite even crosses the species boundary!
