Default Frederick Reynolds Wedge. Just won.

    Woot!

Well, I really shouldn't have spent the money, especially since I just bought a set of shaptons that haven't even arrived yet, but I just couldn't resist this one.

Vintage Straight Razor Frederick Reynolds Sheffield NR - eBay (item 310154390323 end time Jul-16-09 19:17:07 PDT)

The scales, which I'm guessing are mottled/painted horn appear to be in very good shape. Some very light sanding and sealing and they should be good as new.

The blade shows practically no hone wear that I can see.

    Thanks.

If it wasn't for the almost complete lack of hone wear, I would have hesitated at the price, but it looks so good, I just couldn't resist.

Now the big question; do I oil up the scales, hone the blade, and call it good? Or, do I I unpin it, sand/buff the whole thing so it looks new, and then re-pin before I hone it?

I guess I'll have to see what it looks like once it arrives.

Nice one. I've got 2 FR and they're my favorites - but don't tell the others.

    Default Update.

My new Frederick Reynolds wedge arrived today.

First of all, the pictures COMPLETELY failed to do it justice. It's right at 15/16" at the widest point, and the hone wear really is as light as it looks. If I had to guess, I'd say this razor was only ever honed once.

90% of the blade was mirror shiny, although there was a small amount of active rust.

Because some of the active rust was at the pivot, I went ahead an unpinned the razor, cleaned off the rust, and buffed the razor so the whole thing is 'almost' shiny. (mirror seems wrong on this particular razor)

I used wax to buff and seal the mottled horn, and repinned with 1/16 brass rod and double washers. #0 domed over #0 wide.

Also, the wedge was lead, so I lightly sanded off the black oxidation and waxed it as well.

I'll post pictures later if anyone is interested.

Great buy and at a reasonable price. Do you plan on keeping this one for your rotation or are you going to put it in the classifieds? Can't wait to see the pic's.
